The Zouk Refúgio Method

Private Attention Leads to Rapid Progress

Sometimes, hearing the same concept explained by three different teachers is what finally makes it click.

We focus on the concepts and foundations that make your dancing stronger. We connect you with teachers who specialize in what you need to learn and skilled training partners who help you put those lessons into practice. Through ongoing feedback, we adapt the pace and intensity of your training to match your goals.

Why random privates are not enough

You could book it all yourself. Here is what that looks like.

  • Choosing professors

On your ownA list from a friend’s last trip — and some of them are out of town when you arrive.

At RefúgioWe match each professor to you, your goals and the concept you most need.

  • When a lesson falls through

On your ownLate starts, last-minute cancellations, rebooking on your own.

At RefúgioEvery session is guaranteed. If one falls through, we replace it. If you are not happy with a session, we replace it at no cost to you.

  • What to work on

On your ownWhatever each professor decides to teach that day.

At RefúgioOne evolving plan. Each session builds on the last.

  • Training partners

On your ownHard to find, especially in English.

At RefúgioHand-picked and scheduled for you. Get feedback and train what you learned in your private.

  • Support

On your ownNo one to ask when you are stuck.

At RefúgioA coach who checks in every week, and a team that cares about your growth and shares useful insights to help you.

  • Socials

On your ownGoing alone and waiting for dances.

At RefúgioEvery night, and we go together.

  • Where you stay

On your ownAn apartment on your own.

At RefúgioA house with dance floors, shared meals and other dancers.

  • Your schedule

On your ownRealistically, the first weeks go to organizing.

    At RefúgioBuilt before you arrive.

For a dance as sensitive and personal as Zouk, privates make all the difference. Comparing with a congress? A congress gives you many teachers for a weekend, in a group. An immersion gives you the right teachers, one to one, for as long as you stay.

Six stages

The method, step by step.

01

Assess

Before you arrive we ask about your history, your goals and what you want to change, and watch recent videos if you have them. On your first day, your coaching team sees and feels you dance firsthand during your private assessment. The plan starts there.

Two kinds of session

Learning it, and making it yours.

Where you learn

Private lesson

A professor introduces or refines a concept — technique, connection, musicality — and you work on it together. You learn, and you do.

Structured training

A highly skilled dancer trains the concept with you and gives you live feedback while you dance: what they felt, what they didn’t, what it is and what it isn’t. Less explanation, more precise repetition. It’s still a private lesson, and you’ll spend almost the entire session dancing to embody the techniques you’re learning.

You can swap any 1-hour private lesson for 2 hours of training.

What the method is — and isn’t.

It is not a formula, and it makes no scientific claims. It is a way of organizing your time in São Paulo so that lessons, training and social dancing point in the same direction — and of checking, every week, that they still do.

How intense is it?

It can be. That is why your coach follows how you feel as well as your technique, and adjusts your load. You can swap any 1-hour private lesson for 2 hours of lighter training.

What is the difference between a private lesson and training?

A private lesson is where you learn: a professor introduces or refines a concept and you work on it together. Training is where it becomes yours: you repeat it with a highly skilled dancer who gives you live feedback on what they feel.

Who will teach me?

Professors are chosen for your plan, based on the concept you most need and what each of them does best. Over a stay you may work with several, always in the same direction. We carefully match the available professors to what you need to learn. If you are not happy with a session, we replace it at no cost. Rest assured, we select the best professor available in town for the concept you need. All privates are satisfaction guaranteed.

What if a professor cancels?

Every session is guaranteed. If one falls through, we replace it. If you are not happy with a session, we replace it at no cost.

Will I have training partners?

Yes. Training partners are hand-picked and scheduled for you. In Signature, personal dance partners also dance with you through the first hour of socials.
